All We Ever Need To Know

Looking for writing ideas, I decided to go for a walk. Out into the world, where all ideas are waiting for me to catch a glimpse of them

I didn’t have to go far.

I stepped off the back deck just in time to see a tiny house wren hopping after a moth and catch it. Seeing how quick the moth was, it seemed impossible.

When you think about it, all of nature seems impossible, doesn’t it?

As much as science has managed to answer a few questions, it leaves millions unanswered. Like how do the universes function so beautifully? From the dance between the wren and the moth to the literally countless stars and planets that move flawlessly throughout the galaxies, we don’t know how it works.

The fact that we don’t know, or understand, is a joyous thought.

Instead of bemoaning that we don’t know how things work, why not celebrate that they do and that we don’t have to understand how in order for it to be happening. Instead, we can relax into the rhythm of the Intelligent One that is guiding every single thing we know, and all the billions of things we don’t know.

Even when lives and events don’t look as if they are moving in harmony, they must be. When it doesn’t appear that they are, either we are overlaying our human perception on what we are experiencing, or we don’t see the big picture. Yet.

A family of those amazing house wrens lives right outside of our living room window in a birdhouse meant for bluebirds, but they moved in first. They are a delight to observe as they pop in and out of their house, and fly out into the world, returning with food for their young ones. I have watched them so filled with the joy of the harmony of life that they have dropped the food in their mouth to belt out a song. A song that vibrates throughout their entire body.

What do they know that we don’t know?

Perhaps it is what they don’t know that produces such joy. Instead of needing to know, they feel the truth of being. They live fully. They don’t try to work things out in their way or control the events in their lives.

Perhaps they are innately in tune with the Bible’s statement, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God…” Turn the word God into its original meaning, good, and we get “when we love good, all things work together for good.

When we recognize and celebrate with joy the awareness of One moving its countless unique expressions of itself in perfect harmony like a celestial song, we are loving good.

Perhaps the wrens are aware of that celestial song.

I wonder how much Goethe knew about this harmony of One, when he said this:

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative and creation, there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too.

All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favour all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings and material assistance which no man could have dreamed would have come his way.

Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Begin it now.”

Loving good. Not needing to know how it works, celebrating that it does.

Something goes on in nature, that when we catch even the briefest glimpse of it, the heavens open up for a moment, and we know all that we need to know. We are One with the Infinite.

Step outside just for a moment, and let yourself feel that harmony of One. Whether it’s the country or the city, that awareness is there just waiting to catch you up in its joy. Be willing. Love good. It will happen.

Scientists have studied the phenomenon of murmuration. They can find no leader, or signals passed. It’s an example of not needing to know. Instead, it is an example of the experience of One.
